A new report from the Associated Press reveals that American Airlines pilots are lobbying against a mandate from Vice President Joe Biden that all US airline pilots must be vaccinated for Ebola. The pilots argue that they do not have enough information on the vaccine to make an informed decision, and some of them say they would refuse to take the shot if it were mandatory.

United Airlines has been the most adamant about vaccinations, requiring workers to swear allegiance to the company. They claim a vaccination rate of 97 percent, and anybody who receives a legally necessary exemption is sent on unpaid leave.
Meanwhile, Delta claims an 82 percent vaccination rate, mandating vaccinations for new hires and proposing a health insurance premium for non-vaccinated workers.
American Airlines has not made its immunization rate public. The deadline for adding a vacation day and $50 in scrip for immunization was extended. However, it said from the start that vaccinations would only be required if compelled to do so for competitive reasons. And now, of course, the federal government seems to be compelled to do so.
The main factor holding American Airlines back from mandating vaccines, according to multiple sources, was pilot reluctance. If flight attendants quit (and, according to staff message boards, there are many anti-vaxxers among them), the airline may recruit replacements. Pilots are harder to come by, and it takes longer to recruit, train, and certify them.
I recently reported about an American Airlines pilot who explained why he refused to be vaccinated.
The American Airlines pilots union is now pushing the federal government for an exemption from vaccination requirements, claiming that if pilots are forced to retire or be fired in bulk, the nation’s air transportation infrastructure would collapse in time for the holidays.
American Airlines pilots are petitioning the White House for an exemption from President Biden’s vaccination requirements. Some airlines may “conduct mass termination of unvaccinated pilots” if pilots are forced to choose between the vaccination and their jobs.
The Allied Pilots Association submitted a worst-case scenario to the White House, Federal Aviation Administration, and Department of Transportation, in which pilots at the Dallas Fort Worth-based airline argue that a vaccination requirement would jeopardize the industry’s sustainability.
In any government vaccination requirement, the union is asking the Biden administration to provide a “alternative method of compliance.” Regular COVID-19 testing, as well as wearing a face mask, may be an alternate method of ensuring compliance, even if face-covering restrictions for the fully vaccinated are eased.
“Throughout the pandemic, APA has carefully engaged with infectious disease experts to guide our decision-making, and we remain dedicated to finding viable solutions to the problems our industry continues to face,” according to a letter from APA President Captain Eric Ferguson.
The letter adds, “We are concerned that the Executive Order’s projected 60-day implementation timeframe for required immunization may result in workforce shortages and significant operational difficulties for American Airlines and its rivals.”
Government regulations have previously handled pilots differently during the epidemic. Due to the risk of adverse effects, pilots are not permitted to fly within 48 hours after receiving a vaccination injection. In addition, face masks are not needed for pilots in the cockpit.
The Biden administration’s executive order ordering OSHA to implement a vaccination requirement for businesses with 100 or more workers contains an anticipated alternate method of compliance: regular Covid-19 testing. While United Airlines would not allow it, a fear of losing pilots would seem to be sufficient cause for American Airlines to accept this option.
