American Airlines announced that it would no longer offer the Boston – New York route due to low demand. American’s decision is not an isolated case, as other airlines have also made similar announcements in recent years. However, despite this trend towards fewer flights between these two cities, many carriers are still offering service on the popular routes.,

The Eastern Shuttle, which was sold to Donald Trump in 1989 (“Trump Shuttle”), was the forerunner to the American Airlines Shuttle. Hourly flights between Second York, Boston, and Washington, DC were popular, as were flexible booking methods and open seating – and, at one point, a guarantee of transportation, with Eastern even bringing out a new plane to accommodate overflow passengers.
Banks, backed by Citigroup, eventually seized the Trump Shuttle back and sold 40 percent of it to US Airways in 1992, along with a 10-year operating deal. In 1997, they bought the remaining share.
After America West took over US Airways, the Shuttle was no longer operated as an airline-within-an-airline. They discontinued flying an all-coach subfleet of planes in its own livery. When American Airlines was taken over by US Airways, the shuttle became an American Airlines offering.
In a few aspects, the ‘Shuttle’ product is being replaced by American. Beginning this summer,
- The service between New York LaGuardia Airport and Boston is being discontinued. JetBlue, their partner, will run this route altogether.
- New York LaGuardia – Washington National, Boston – Washington National, New York LaGuardia – Chicago, Dallas – Chicago, and Dallas – Los Angeles are among the areas where typical Shuttle-like rates will be introduced. These refundable “Main Select” prices include priority boarding and check-in, free seat allocations for any coach seat (including additional legroom), and free same-day confirmed adjustments.
In an internal message sent to workers this morning, American said,
Although there were specialized airport counters, American’s shuttle flights no longer offered the same flexibility as shuttle flights previously had. These rates, of course, will not include shorter check-in periods, nor will they include shorter bag check-in deadlines. Both New York LaGuardia and Washington National Airports have been remodeled to make the walk from the curb to security and the gate longer.
Take a moment to reflect on the shuttle program, which began 60 years ago in April 1961. The Delta shuttle was developed by Frank Lorenzo’s New York Air, which was later sold to Pan Am. (Lorenzo had to sell New York Air in order for his purchase of Eastern Airlines to be approved by the Department of Justice.)
