I am compensated for the content and many links on my site. Citibank, American Express, Chase, Barclays, and Capital One are all advertising partners on this site. My advertising partners have not reviewed, authorized, or supported any of the views stated in this article. I don’t write about all credit cards; instead, I concentrate on miles, points, and cash back (and currencies that can be converted into the same). The offers and perks mentioned on this website are subject to the terms.
Student credit card incentives are often modest, but they may aid in the development of credit in order to qualify for a rewards card in the future. Many pupils are eligible for premium cards already. Students are authorized for them on a regular basis. However, many aren’t.
A good place to start is with the Chase Freedom® Student credit card. It’s a no-fee card that gives you a $50 bonus after your first purchase during the first three months of account creation and gives you 1% cash back on all transactions.
There’s more: for the first five years of your account, you’ll get a $20 Good Standing Reward.
Earning ‘cash back’ with a Chase Ultimate Rewards card appeals to me since Ultimate Rewards points may be transferred across accounts. So, rather than using the points, I’d store them and merge them into a premium card later, when the points earned on this card become even more valuable (imagine utilizing points at 1.5 cents each via the Sapphire Reserve card’s ‘Pay Yourself Back’ feature, or converting to airline miles).
The Chase Freedom® Student credit card also comes with a slew of other perks, including:
- DoorDash: free three months of DoorDash DashPass, which includes unlimited deliveries for a $0 delivery charge on qualifying DoorDash and Caviar purchases over $12. (other fees apply). Then you’ll save 50% on DashPass for the following nine months (auto enrollment). Activation is required by December 31, 2021.
- Lyft is offering a 5% cashback on Lyft trips until March 2022.
- Purchase protection, extended warranty protection, and travel cancellation/interruption coverage are all included.
A student card may be intended to make approvals easier for those who don’t have a lot of credit history but have a lot more money than they have now. It’s a niche product that I wish we saw more of, and it comes with a lot of benefits. I hope we could see this on ex-pat cards as well.
Chase may be better than a late-career professional if they can attract students into their environment. They have less money now, but longer years as prospective consumers ahead of them.
When I check in to Chase.com recently, I’ve even seen advertisements for Chase accounts for 6-year-olds. Extending the scope of family accounts (which raises switching costs) and reaching out to consumers while they’re young are both good moves (and beginning to form financial habits).
I’d start with the Chase Freedom® Student credit card and work my way up. More rewards cards can help you perform better, but they’re often intended for those who have a longer credit history. It’s encouraging to see products that begin the credit journey without requiring consumers to give up all of their rewards.
