Some airlines are offering the cheapest fares in history, but that doesn’t mean you should book your trip just yet. The low prices come with a caveat: passengers will be exposed to more germs than ever before.
The why are flights so expensive right now 2021 is a question that many people ask. There are many reasons for the high prices, but one of the main ones is that airlines have been raising their prices to cover fuel costs.
Why Cheap Airline Tickets Could Make You Sick
on October 9, 2021 by Gary Leff
United Airlines has the highest vaccination rate. That doesn’t make them the healthiest airline in the event of a pandemic. Passengers spend more time with other passengers than they do with staff, both at the gate area and on board.
United and American Airlines both offer non-changeable basic economy tickets. If you get ill and are unable to travel, you will forfeit the whole value of your ticket. That’s a powerful reason to fly ill. (Delta allows passengers to alter basic economy tickets until December 31, 2021.)
You are not need to purchase a basic economy ticket. Change costs are no longer applicable to most other domestic and international tickets originating in the United States, but you will still be charged the difference in price if you need to reschedule your trip. That makes it simpler to decide not to travel while you’re unwell, which is beneficial not just for you but also for all the other passengers you won’t infect.
However, purchasing a changeable ticket and avoiding basic economy does not protect you from contracting a disease from other passengers. Flying on an airline that encourages ill customers to travel by selling tickets that lose all value if they don’t puts you in an atmosphere where sick individuals are more probable.
Basic economy is the method by which airlines distinguish between price-conscious leisure passengers and price-insensitive business travelers. They want to sell to both – and offer the same seats to both – while avoiding selling a business traveler a ticket for less than they’re prepared to pay. Airlines used to segregate these consumers using advantage purchase requirements and Saturday night stays, but when low-cost carriers ceased enforcing these restrictions, traditional airlines had to stop competing as well. As a result, fundamental financial constraints became the new Saturday night stay.
Basic economic constraints differ. Bringing a full-sized carry-on bag or checking in online for basic customers who aren’t checking a bag are both prohibited by United. On these tickets, American does not give any credit toward elite status. Advance seat allocations are either not permitted or come at a cost. All of this is reasonable, but the prohibition on modifications poses a public health risk.
Customers who are worried about their health should think twice before flying with an airline when they are unable to alter their tickets even if they get unwell.
Of course, basic economy tickets are not available on Southwest Airlines. Even before United Airlines and subsequently other U.S. airlines eliminated change fees last year, all Southwest Airlines tickets were changeable without charge. Southwest may become the favored airline for travelers who do not want to feel ill when flying as a result of this.
